The beautiful Jaguar Mk. I 2.4 Saloon was introduced in 1956, and quickly became one of the most sought after Saloon cars of the day.Subsequent versions in later years included a 3.4 Liter car, and in 1960, Jaguar introduced the most potent version to date, the Mk.II 3.8, fitted with the XK -150's 3.8 Liter engine, suspension refinements, and a slightly modified body incorporating thinner window frames and other minor details, making and already beautiful car simply stunning. The 3.8 cars, with the available 4 speed manual gearchange with overdrive, 4 wheel disc brakes, and wire wheel option, became wildly successful in the Saloon Racing of the day, winning many races and being the mount of choice for the top drivers of the day. Here is an excerpt from a British motoring magazine about the Mk.II 3.8 cars:
1959 was a memorable year for English motoring and the British automotive industry. Their first super highway M1 was partially opened, a mid-engined Cooper driven by Jack Brabham won the Formula-1 title, and two automotive legends, the Mini and the Jaguar Mk.II, debuted that year. The origins of the Jaguar Mk.II date back to the early 1950's, when the company was basking in the fame of their 2 seat XK sports car and the Iuxurious Mk.VII. They wanted to strengthen their lineup with the addition of a compact and sporty saloon car, so in 1955, the Jaguar 2.4, or Mk.I, as it became known retrospectively, made its debut. With its elegant styling, superb performance and affordable price, the Mk.I became an instant suc- cess. The Mk.II was to bring this already successful car closer to perfection. In addition to the 2.4 and 3.4 liter engines inherited from the Mk.I, a 3.8 liter version with its higher performance was offered. The front double wishbone and rear leaf spring cantilever suspension system underwent rework, and provided an improved handling. The body style was similar to the Mk.I; however, the glass area was greatly increased by using slender pillars and sash door windows, giving the car a fresher look. The classic wire wheels were options, but seen through the spokes were modern disk it brakes. The Mk.II soon gained a reputation as the fastest production saloon of the times, and this was proven by numerous victories in competitions. Jaguar's Mk.II truly earned, and deserved, the name "Sporty Saloon" car.
